🚗 On our way back from a road trip out to Bendigo visiting the @losttrades fair and getting out of the city drag.

⚒️ seeing other artisans practicing their handcrafts and talk so passionately about their work, out in the regions was a most excellent day spent out. Watched a leatherworker make a quality belt from start to finish, a goldsmith teaching his skills to the next generation and even someone turning wood using a manually powered lathe (made of wood)

🏰 we stayed in an Airbnb that was a castle (at least from the outside). A change of environment was something we both needed.

🍄🍁 stopped into my Macedon Ranges based stockist @theoldauctionhouse in Kyneton this morning, there’s an exhibition showing by @marthaisermanart in the gallery at the moment featuring mycelium and mysticism themed watercolour originals, and I want all of them on my studio walls 🥹

🛣️ I love driving out on the open highway. We only ventured two hours from home, and here in Australia that doesn’t feel like you have gone very far - in the UK when we drove there, you can get a fair distance across the country.

🎨 After tidying my studio yesterday, I’ve been swatching out a new colourway in the Eternal Window series - an Australian outback inspired red desert landscape. This colourway was actually the first to come to mind, but hadn’t yet been made up as a physical sample.

🔑 I’ve found that the key to creating interlocking designs with minimal gaps and more than 5-6 different colours is to ensure that all the materials are as close as possible to the same thickness.

🤏🏻 Most solid cast acrylic colours are generally 2.8-3.1mm in thickness and will play nicely with other 3mm thick acrylics (the most common thickness of the material sheets I use). Due to the hand-poured manufacturing process of marbled cast acrylic sheets, the burgundy marbled sheet and the coppery brown shimmer sheet were actually 2.1mm and 2.3mm thick when measured with calipers.

🆙 I’ve given these pieces a little boost upwards with some thin laser-safe plastic adhered to the back, to raise them up to a height to match the solid acrylic pieces. This way, they interlock more closely without major gaps!

🏺🖼️ Yesterday I started prototyping some new products that aren’t wearable - I’m on version 3 of the laser cut files after a good session of deep focus yesterday. I’ve been posting less and loving not having the pressure of constantly needing to create for the socials - I’m creating for the joy of the creative process.

🪜 A new era for Celestial Closet at @incube8r ✨

🌟 I spent this morning moving out of my glass cube and setting up some of my market stall display props in my new larger shelf space at the @incube8r Melbourne Central pop-up!

💫 I was feeling nostalgic tonight and thought it would be a good time to look back on all my previous years at the cube (I even found some photos of the Fitzroy store from before the big renovation!)

📆 In September of 2018, I signed up to become a cuber at in.cube8r Fitzroy, after some friendly emails with gallery owner @may.michaels. I didn’t originally have a cube - I had a big shelf space on top of a 4x4 block of cubes that was in the front window of the Fitzroy store, because I sold flower crowns and headwear! I had to take a three month break from the cube after smashing my ankle (and surgery for another thing) at the end of 2018 - and had to send my partner (who I had only been dating for four months) to go and collect all my remaining stock.

🎁 At the time, I lived in Carnegie, and when the Prahran cube opened in 2019, I started in a new space there, as it was easier for me to drive to and restock at Prahran. I had a shelf space for a while in Prahran, and even taught a workshop!

🌪️ The pandemic happened, but I chose to keep my cube, and stick around despite the physical shop being mostly closed. in.cube8r pivoted and opened an online store.

💥 It’s 2021. I moved from a shelf into a cube once I had pivoted to jewellery design. Prahran closed at the end of the year, and I moved back to Fitzroy.

💖 2022. What a turbulent year. After a few too many chats about websites, system and techy things with @may.michaels, which led to talking about the possibility of a pop-up shop, I joined the cube team as a staff member a few weeks before Melbourne Central opened.

👩🏻‍🎨 It’s now 2023, and the pop up shop is continuing for another 3 months. A year ago, I had just signed a contract to start in another full time corporate role, and I’m so happy I walked away from that world, because now I’m surrounded by inspiring art during the week, instead of drab office walls and stark fluorescent lights.

🙌 I’ve had a little bit of time this morning to finish assembling eight of my Jade Rabbit and the Harvest Moon brooches! A few requests have come through for this older design of mine recently, and I had some pieces that I had previously cut out, that just needed to be painted!

🐰There are 5 of these brooches now in stock and available to purchase on my website, and I’m putting the other three brooches into my cube at @incube8r Fitzroy this afternoon, before we head down the Mornington Peninsula for a short holiday this weekend. Local pickup is possible from the @incube8r Fitzroy or Melbourne Central stores 🏬

🐰Any orders placed via my website will be shipped out on Monday 16th January, when I’m back from my short break.

🏮🧨 A small quantity of Lunar Lantern tassel earrings and the Festive Firecracker earrings are currently available via @incube8r. I will list more of the firecracker earrings on my website once they are cut, painted and assembled and all ready to ship.

🎏 Hoping to work on the new carp fish design when I am back home after our trip. So excited to go to the hot springs this weekend and rest my tired bones for a little bit 🧖‍♀️

✨ 22 new wearable art designs were released in 2022, along with the return of several old favourites!

🎁 In 2022, 240 items were sold through my website, 100 pieces sold at @incube8r, and around 75 pieces via @theoldauctionhouse. That’s over 400 magical wearables which have found new homes!! Thank you so much for your support (and continued support) during what was a very turbulent year ☺️

🎂 Celestial Closet turned 5 in February…but I didn’t celebrate properly due to life getting in the way.

🏥 Went to hospital 3 times in 2022 - twice for surgery! Diagnosed with several chronic conditions. Stood up for my own health needs and surrounded myself with a good care team.

👩🏻‍💻 Quit my full time job after 8 years in web design, eCommerce integration, IT support, and software consulting to focus on looking after my health.

🌶️ Got the spicy cough. It caused me months of fatigue and brain fog. During my worst days, I taught myself how to crochet and rekindled a love for video games.

✈️ Travelled to Dubai and the UK during July and August. Met @autumn.aurelia, @alexanderlockwoodwrites, @offcutstudio, @rosapietsch and @yayraeflay in person! Drove from Edinburgh all the way back down to London and celebrated 4 years together with my partner Hunter.

⚡️⚡️ Welcomed Ziltoid the Omniscient (big laser cutter) into my home studio. Dabbled with making larger items like signage, and larger runs of jewellery.

👩🏻‍🎨 Started working a few days a week at my long-term stockist @incube8r in November when the Melbourne Central pop-up shop opened. The support for locally handmade products was very much on the up this year, and being able to tell the stories of other independent makers while surrounded by incredible art is a pretty cool job!

🏞️ Going to see where I can journey with Celestial Closet in 2023. Bigger laser cut pieces are on the horizon, and I’m dabbling in metalsmithing which could be a unique addition to my designs. Returning to full time office based work is not where I’d like to be right now, but part time work on regular days gives me some sense of structure and routine, and space to dedicate to being a practicing artist.

With Christmas now over for another year, it’s straight into working on some new pieces for Lunar New Year coming up on January 22nd 🎇 I bought a new sketchbook this week, along with a new thick barrelled mechanical pencil (I’m fussy - my mechanical pencils must have 2B grey leads which are 0.7mm thick). ✏️ Although I work with computer aided design software (CAD), most of my designs actually start as traditional drawings. I just can’t get the same feel on a tablet as I do on paper. These sketches will be digitised either with a mouse or with the Apple Pencil on my iPad to optimise them for laser cutting.

The Lunar New Year 2022 release was one of my most well received collections, and a way for me to celebrate part of my cultural heritage through my art practice.

I found this delightful carp fish fabric at @seeded_buttons in Portsmouth on my last day in the UK, back in August, and bought enough to sew up a simple cap sleeve top. I really want to have a carp fish design as part of the 2023 collection, as 2022 has been a year of perseverance and fighting currents upstream. Some carp fish can also transform into dragons in Chinese mythology! (Hence the beardy tendrils!) 🐉

There might be time for another mahjong tile design (and maybe I’ll finally sew up my @852fabric mahjong fabric into a dress) 🀄️ And possibly a new rabbit design for the 2023 year of the rabbit 🐇

I’ll do a slightly more reflective post on the year that was later on, 2022 has had many ups and downs, but it’s ended in a pretty good place 🌅

🏜️I took design inspiration from the Middle Eastern architectural patterns and landscapes seen on my travels to Dubai in July 2022, to create another series of gilded scenery earrings, and some concentric star hoops which use lush mirror, marbled and pearlescent acrylics ✴️

😮‍💨 It’s been a wild few weeks between working at the cube shops, and dealing with weekly open for inspections of our home, and I’ve just run out of steam to finalise a matching brooch and necklace in time for pre-Christmas delivery, but I’ll add these to the collection in early 2023! ☺️

🙇🏻‍♀️ I’ve been suuuuuper mega busy (more on that below) but have also really wanted to take more time to focus the process of creating my art and not on having to worry about documenting every single step of the creation process for the ✨c0nt3nt ✨ (which takes me away from the joy of making my art).

👩🏻‍🎨 for those new here, I’m Christine - I make magical things out of acrylic and wood with my two laser cutters. Mostly wearables for now, but I’m starting to work on some bigger things like signage and functional art objects.

🧝‍♀️ for the last month I’ve been a busy shop lady/elf at @incube8r - one of my long term stockists, and now also my workplace 3 days per week. It’s a pretty cool job - I get to talk about handmade art, jewellery, clothing and objects all day, and tell the stories of all the makers in the shop. I’m also getting really good at fast gift wrapping 🎁

👩🏻‍💻 I’m getting ready for my last online shop update of 2022 - it’s going to be online this weekend (8pm AEDT on Saturday 10th) with all items ready to ship. It’s a small release, including the Eternal Window pieces (earrings only right now), the Stellar Star Hoops, and a small restock of the Native Floral studs and charm drop earrings. I’m not going to push myself to make more new things just because it’s coming up to Christmas - my health comes first. I’ll be putting much more energy into an expanded new Lunar New Year collection straight after Christmas, because that occasion holds much more significance for me.

💌 I’m hoping to have all orders placed over the weekend out in the post on Monday or Tuesday so they have the best chance of pre-Xmas delivery (Australia excluding WA and NT), but I will keep my shop open right through the holiday period. The last two years I’ve closed up early in December because of the shipping delays - please be gentle with small business owners during this busy time!

🌌 Every piece that leaves my studio is meticulously checked for quality of the painted finishes - meaning nice crisp details and no patchy or thin spots.

🖌️ While it is easier to paint pieces with the protective masking tape on - more often than not, there will be bits of a detailed design where the paint seeps underneath the tape, or corners or small bits that get missed.

👌🏻 Once the masking tape is peeled off I’ll go in and touch up areas where the paint didn’t take the first time and then carefully clean the excess paint off to reveal a crisp and even painted finish.

👩🏻‍🎨 It doesn’t matter if I use acrylics and a paintbrush, or a paint marker - usually I spend time cleaning up and perfecting painted finishes, and I’ve accepted that’s a challenge that comes with this medium!

✨ This is just the front of these pieces - the backs need varnishing next!!

🧑🏻‍🍳 hello, my name is Christine and I like baking homemade mooncakes (and also laser cutting mooncakes) 🥮 this is the 2022 batch - there (were) 30 of them, but had to sample a few for quality control purposes 😜

🌞🌛 mooncakes are a multiple day project - both the fillings and dough need to be made a day ahead to give the dough time to rest and the filling time to firm up, and they also need two days to rest after baking in an airtight container, so that the outer pastry becomes glossy and the stamped design on top becomes more defined as the oil softens the mooncake skin. These ones probably need another day to become really glossy! There is a detailed story highlight with the making process from my baking adventures in 2021.

🥮🥮🥮 one of my love languages to show love to others is by cooking them food - so I’ll be sharing some of these mooncakes with friends and neighbours this weekend (including the lovely gentleman living on our street who helped me with lifting my new laser cutter up the stairs, and his family)

🌕 mooncakes usually have a salted duck egg yolk inside to represent the full moon (as it is a lunar holiday). These mini mooncakes are a bit too small to put yolks inside!

🐇 there are also rabbit motifs on the top of some of the mooncakes (and my brooch design). This represents the Jade Rabbit, who in Chinese mythology, lives on the Moon with the goddess Chang’e preparing elixirs for the immortals. In Korea and Japan, the Moon Rabbit is usually depicted pounding mochi rice paste with a mortar and pestle 🍡

🥮 I hope all this talk of mooncakes hasn’t made anyone too hungry! Lunar festivals always have an abundance of treats! Also, how sweet are the tiny adorable hand decorated Mid-Autumn cookies by @vickiee_yo (slide 3)🐰😍

✨This is a super small release - but I’ve tried to balance getting these pieces listed before Mid-Autumn starts this Saturday, and also how many pieces I have been able to make in the short timeframe I’ve had after recovering from surgery.

🎁 All Mid-Autumn Festival pieces are ready to ship, and will be dispatched within 24-48 hours of your order being placed. I can’t guarantee they’ll reach you before Saturday 10th, but I do offer express postage and if you’re in Melbourne Metro, Sendle is usually pretty fast with delivery.

🔥 I’m firing up the laser cutting kitchen and preparing a small run of wearables to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival 🌕

✨New for 2022 is a new colourway in the Mooncake Earrings (Taro/Lavender Marble). Red Bean and White Lotus flavoured mooncakes will be returning in both earrings and brooches - numbers will be limited this year as I’ve only got a small amount of the caramel material left for the mooncake “pastry” at the moment and there isn’t enough time to get it shipped from overseas. I’m hoping to have them available in the shop early next week.

🍠 Taro (colocasia esculenta) is a tropical plant grown for its edible root which has purple flesh. Its flavour is mild - slightly nuttier and sweeter than potato! Great as a colourful bubble tea flavour too, in powdered form.

🐰 Mid-Autumn Festival Collection Re-Release 🥮

Last October, I did a little mini-release of some Mid-Autumn Festival themed pieces, but I was a little too late to the party! Late August is always a busy time for me as it’s my birthday, and I’ve had to take some extra time out this month to recover from travelling and surgery, but I’m hoping to have these available when my shop reopens next week! (Likely to be September 1st).

I have a few pieces already cut out for the mooncake earrings and brooches from last year, to be able to do a small restock of some of these pieces, and I might add a new colourway into the mix if I have time. The “White Lotus” and “Red Bean” mooncake “flavours” were well loved, and I’m thinking of adding a Taro (purple yam) mooncake to the lineup too!

There have also been a few requests for the Jade Rabbit and the Harvest Moon brooch (first photo) and the Lunar Lantern Tassel Earrings. Please let me know if you’d be interested in either of these pieces - stock for the moon rabbit brooch will be limited due to one of the materials being from the UK.

💫 Fun fact: I had this name planned out for the new laser cutter for a while…I was having second thoughts about the name, until I unboxed the machine, and discovered the factory name of the machine was Devin!

👽 Canadian musician Devin Townsend released an concept album/space rock opera in 2007 entitled “Ziltoid the Omniscient” - Ziltoid is an alien who travels across the omniverse in search of the ultimate cup of coffee ☕️

🛸 This was later followed by a sequel - Z2: Dark Matters, featuring characters such as Captain Spectacular, the War Princess and the tiny, annoying but adorably cute little Poozers!

⚡️⚡️ Long story short, I now am the proud owner of two laser cutters, and they both have space-inspired names that start with the Z and end with the letter D. Not confusing at all! Ziltoid might get called “Zilly” for short 😜

🌬 Because toxic fumes are not cool, I modelled and 3D printed a custom exhaust adapter to connect the back port of the laser to some 6 inch HVAC ducting and a powerful inline fan to extract the dust and fumes.

🌤 Following a small hiccup with the door sensor not working, all systems are now go! However, I’m having a (long time planned!) surgery tomorrow and I’ll need a few days to recover before I’m able to get back on the tools. I’m hoping to reopen the shop towards the end of August, but I’ll see how I’m travelling.

🔧There’s a little bit more calibration to do before I can run the first test cuts on the new machine. I’ve now got a 730mm x 430mm work area to play with, which is more than four times the work area that I had previously!

🤔 Thinking about what I want to cut on the big new laser first - I have the space to do some larger signage and displays now, and decorative pieces like wall hangings…so many possibilities! While I do like earrings, I’m keen to explore other items that are not wearable, but are functional and inspire magical, dreamy spaces. What would you like to see me create next? ✨

🌇 Finding Design Inspiration in Dubai 🏜

🇦🇪🇬🇧 In case you missed my announcements, I’m travelling overseas for a month with my partner! We had a similar trip booked in 2020, which had to be cancelled, and on that itinerary, we didn’t originally plan to stay in Dubai, it was only going to be a stopover.

🍹Currently enjoying our adventures in Dubai so far, despite nearly melting every time we step outside 🥵 it’s been around 40-41°C most days. Yesterday was 46% humidity, so it felt like 52°C 🔥

✈️ There’s a sense of place and travel in many of my wearable art and jewellery designs - whether that’s a fantasy place I’ve dreamed up in my mind, or a real place or time period. I am particularly fond of the subjects of nature and the cosmos, and like encapsulating these subjects in tiny little laser cut worlds that you can take with you.

🕌 I’m really, really enjoying the architecture and traditional Islamic geometry designs found on the older buildings in Dubai. A lot of these patterns carry over into trellises, interior surface designs and floor tiles in the newer parts of Dubai, such as the Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa area.

⛓ While Dubai from the outside might appear glamorous and luxurious, do note that there have been, and still are, human rights violations and instances of modern slavery occurring, which is much of what the city was built on. Attitudes particularly towards migrants and women still have not progressed very much.

🛕Going to the Deira side of the Dubai creek on Wednesday revealed a very different reality to the illuminated, glitzy districts in the south that Dubai is known for. The souk (street market) vendors in the areas around the creek definitely were not making a living wage selling kaftans, shoes and mass produced souvenirs for as little as 10 AED (around $3.50 AUD).

💫 At the core of a star are intense inwardly crushing pressures and high temperatures creating starlight - sometimes up to 15 million Kelvin 🤯

👩🏻‍🔬 Don’t mind me getting scientific here, but I am going somewhere with this analogy, and how it relates to some stuff I’ve been going through with life and Celestial Closet recently!

🕯My creative soul and my usual motivation and drive had been reduced to a flicker for most of the first half of 2022. I had very little starlight left in me. I kept questioning where I was heading next with my life, going from job to job, while trying to keep my business and dreams going.

💡I had new ideas, but not enough time to explore them properly. And when I found the time to work on my ideas, I was completely zapped of energy from working regular 9-5 hours at my day job.

🪐 I’d been travelling in this same orbit for the last 5 years - I started selling my Celestial Closet designs to a wider audience in 2017, and saw CC as only as a side hustle for the longest time, like a tiny moon orbiting a main planet.

🌑 In May and June of 2022, came one of the darkest periods in a long time. I went to hospital twice, needed surgery, and to top everything off, I ended up testing positive for Covid-19. I’m still recovering from the longer term effects of the infection.

🌙 During this dark period, I had space to rest and reflect, and to start finding that starlight inside of me again. I was so afraid to jump into the unknown, but I made the choice to resign from my day job, with nothing lined up.

☄️ Now, I’m still finding and forging my path, but Celestial Closet is now my main job, and I’ve already got exciting plans in the works for when I come back from holiday 🚀
